At Balas Family Farms, our beef is the product of daily care, low-stress handling, and a commitment to raising cattle the way they were meant to be raised — on pasture, with room to move, and with attention to their wellbeing at every stage.

Our Cattle

We raise a small, carefully managed herd of cattle hand picked for temperament, beef quality, and how well they fit our farm. Our current herd includes Herefords, Simmental-influenced cattle, a Charolais, and a Belted Galloway — all breeds we are testing and coming to appreciate for their strengths.

Each brings something valuable to our program and was selected for their specific traits:

  • Herefords for their calm nature and consistent finish

  • Simmental crosses for growth, marbling, and balanced muscle

  • Charolais for frame and efficiency

  • Belted Galloway for forage efficiency and smaller size, suitable for homesteads and 4-H’ers

As we continue growing, we’re shaping our beef program around a Hereford × Simmental cross, a pairing known for excellent marbling, strong maternal traits, and calm, easy-to-handle cattle. This cross will become the backbone of our signature beef as we begin developing our own genetics.

We also see a future for a small line of family homestead–ready feeder cattle, guided by temperament, manageability, and suitability for first-time livestock owners. That program will grow naturally alongside our beef herd as our genetics develop.

No matter the breed or stage of development, every animal on our farm is raised with daily attention, low-stress handling, and respect. Great beef starts with great cattle — and we’re intentional about both.

Our cattle are raised on pasture and fed the hay we grow here on our farm. From the beginning, we introduce a small amount of grain to support steady growth and keep our herd familiar with daily handling. This early consistency allows our cattle to stay calm, confident, and comfortable around us — something we value deeply.

As cattle mature, we gradually increase their ration based on their needs. Our finishing cattle receive a balanced mix of grain twice a day, which helps develop marbling, tenderness, and a smooth finish without ever pushing them too hard.

We keep our program simple:
quality forage, consistent nutrition, and a slow, intentional finish.

The result is beef with exceptional flavor, balanced fat cover, and the kind of tenderness you can taste in every cut.

Handled with Care, Every Day

Hannah and I believe that cattle deserve a calm life of comfort, and respect. The animals we raise for beef live their entire lives with one purpose — to nourish others. Because of that, we feel a responsibility to give them the nurturing, low-stress life they deserve.

Our cattle are handled gently, fed well, and cared for daily. When animals are calm and content, they stay healthier and grow better — but more importantly, we know we have honored their life.

We use low-stress techniques whether we’re feeding, rotating pastures, or bringing cattle through the corral. No yelling, no rushing, and no pushing them harder than they can handle. When cattle know what to expect and who is working with them, they stay relaxed — which leads to healthier animals and higher-quality beef.

We want every cut of beef that leaves our farm to be enjoyed with the same respect we put into raising the animal. If every bite is savored, nothing is wasted, and memories are made around good meals, then the life of that animal has been valued, not taken for granted.

For us, producing beef isn’t just about feeding families.
